Elephant Poo Buns!

4th Jun 2026

Yes—you read that correctly! Our recent literacy lesson took a fun and memorable twist while linking closely to our World Around Us topic, Impact.

As part of our learning about protecting and preserving rainforests, the children have been exploring ways to reduce deforestation and campaign for positive environmental change. We watched a fascinating video about an initiative in Thailand where elephant dung—rich in fibre—is transformed into paper. This eco-friendly process helps reduce the need to cut down rainforest trees, sparking great discussion and curiosity in class.

Inspired by this, we brought creativity into our literacy work by writing a set of detailed instructions for making our very own “elephant poo buns”! Don’t worry—despite the unusual name, they were delicious. The children focused on using clear structure, precise vocabulary, and sequencing, carefully following a checklist to ensure their instructions were accurate and easy to follow.

To top off an already exciting lesson, we received some very special post from the Northern Ireland Assembly. The children had previously written letters advocating for rainforest protection and reduced deforestation, and the response praised their efforts. The MPs were truly impressed by the children’s passion and commitment to making a difference—who knows, we may have a future eco-politician among us!

We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, creativity, and determination shown by the children. They are not only developing strong literacy skills but also learning that their voices can help bring about real change.
